Tip-Over Safety Labels — Is Your Clothing Storage Product Compliant?

Mar 29th, 2024 Guides

Each year, there is increased scrutiny for the manufacturers, importers and retailers of clothing storage units to protect children from the risk of tip-over. In 2023 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) adopted a standard that gives consumers peace of mind about the clothing storage units they bring into their homes.

Here’s what the STURDY act means for your clothing storage product and your compliance status in the United States.

What is the STURDY Act?

STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) is a U.S. law that aims to protect children from clothing storage unit tip-overs.

STURDY was signed into U.S. law in December of 2022, and requires dressers, armoires, wardrobes, and other clothing storage units to be tested for their stability.

In September 2023, the CPSC adopted the previously voluntary ASTM F2057-23 standards to meet the requirements of the STURDY act.

How are Clothing Storage Units Tested?

The adopted ASTM standard involves tests for stability in several scenarios to simulate real use conditions. Testing scenarios include:

  • Tests for stability when the unit is placed on carpeting,
  • Tests for stability with loaded drawers and with multiple drawers open
  • Tests that simulate the weight of children up to 60 pounds interacting with the unit

How Can My Clothing Storage Product Comply with STURDY?

The CPSC now requires all clothing storage units to carry a warning label that identifies the risk of tip-over.

The warning label must be conspicuous and brightly colored. The contents of the warning label depend on the type of product and the results of the stability tests.
