Learn how adhesive Tyvek labels can correct the error, which states require documentation, and how we handle it for you.

So, you’ve just discovered that a batch of products went out with an incorrect law label. Maybe the fill content percentages were listed wrong, the manufacturer’s address changed, or a material was misidentified. Whatever the error, the products are already assembled and a full relabeling operation sounds expensive, time-consuming, and logistically painful.

Thankfully, there’s a better way! An adhesive Tyvek label, applied directly over the misprinted label, can serve as a compliant law label correction … If it’s done correctly. Today, we’re walking you through everything manufacturers, importers, and compliance officers need to know about the law label correction process: the material requirements, which state departments require documentation, and how American Law Label can manage the entire process for you.

Alt image text: Close-up of a law label attached to a green throw pillow showing fill content, registration number, and manufacturer information for compliance purposes.

Why Law Label Errors Happen

Law labels are regulated by individual states, and the requirements are more detailed than many manufacturers expect. A label might be printed with outdated fill content data, an incorrect registration number, or a manufacturer name that no longer reflects a company restructuring. Even a small inaccuracy can put a product out of compliance.

Pulling products off shelves, removing old labels, and reattaching corrected ones is one option but it’s expensive and often impractical when thousands of units are already in distribution. That’s where adhesive Tyvek law label correction comes in.

What Makes Adhesive Tyvek A Compliant Correction Material

Now, not just any sticker will do. State regulations are explicit: a corrective label must meet the same material standards as a standard law label. That means it must be durable, non-tearable, and resistant to wear. Regular sticker paper or standard label stock does not meet those requirements and cannot be used for corrective purposes.

Tyvek is a synthetic material made from high-density polyethylene fibers. It’s the same durable, tear-resistant material used for primary law labels which is precisely why it’s accepted as a correction method. When an adhesive Tyvek label is printed with the correct information and applied over the misprinted label, it creates a durable, readable, and compliant overlay.

American Law Label prints on adhesive Tyvek with a turnaround time of 3 to 5 business days, making this one of the fastest paths to getting products back into compliance.

One important limitation to understand: adhesive labels are approved as a corrective measure, but they are not universally approved as the primary method of label attachment for new products. States will allow an adhesive label as a correction on an existing product, but not all states have issued blanket approval for adhesive-only labels as a permanent labeling solution from the start.

6 Departments That Require Documentation For Label Corrections

While the adhesive Tyvek correction method is widely accepted, six state and city departments require manufacturers to submit documentation before or alongside any corrective labeling.

These departments are: Detroit, Connecticut, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Utah.

Each of these jurisdictions wants a record of what happened:

  • what the original label said
  • what the corrected label says
  • baseline information about the scope of the correction.

Here’s how the documentation requirements break down:

Utah is the most specific. It requires its own variance form that must be completed and submitted to the state.

Detroit, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Rhode Island do not have a specific required form, but documentation must still be submitted. The content and format are more flexible, but the submission is not optional.

Connecticut has an additional requirement: manufacturers must provide information about which retail stores in Connecticut are selling the affected product. This is a detail many companies overlook, and missing it can delay approval.

How American Law Label Handles The Documentation for You

Navigating six different departments — each with their own requirements, contacts, and timelines — is a significant administrative burden. We’ve developed a form that has been pre-approved by the relevant state departments. This form is designed to satisfy the documentation requirements for all six jurisdictions in a single submission workflow.

Here’s what the service includes:

  • Drafting the documentation
American Law Label prepares the forms on your behalf, capturing the required information: what the original label stated, what the corrected label states, how many products are affected, and the correction timeline.
  • State submissions
The completed documentation is sent to each applicable department. You don’t have to track down contacts or navigate each department’s submission process independently.
  • Label design and printing
In addition to the documentation service, American Law Label can design your corrective Tyvek label and handle printing, all under one roof.

This end-to-end approach means manufacturers can focus on their operations rather than spending weeks corresponding with multiple regulatory offices.

Service Fees

We’re proud to offer transparent, flat-rate pricing for the variance documentation service.

For a single-state variance, the fee is $150 (or $125 for LM/GC subscribers).

For documentation submitted to all six departments, the fee is $450.

Add-on services are available and charged separately:

  • Law label design: $175 (or $125 for LM/GC subscribers — and free for subscribers who still have their one complimentary artwork per year available)
  • Label printing: quoted based on quantity and specifications

A Note on Who Needs This Service

This service is relevant to any manufacturer, importer, or brand that has discovered a law label error after products have been assembled or distributed. This is why skipping the label proof is so risky! This service could be helpful to furniture manufacturers, bedding producers, stuffed article makers, and anyone else whose products carry a law label under state bedding and upholstered furniture laws.

If you’ve recently gone through a law label audit and discovered labeling discrepancies, or if a supplier error resulted in incorrect fill content information on your labels, the adhesive Tyvek correction process may be exactly the solution you need!

The Bigger Picture: Variances in the Stuffed Article Industry

The documentation process described above — submitting approval for an adhesive label correction — is one type of variance in the stuffed article and bedding industry. But it’s worth noting that it is not the only type.

Variances come in several forms, and each one operates under its own rules and requirements. The Pennsylvania variance, for example, is an entirely different process with its own petition requirements and is still very much in effect. If your products are sold in Pennsylvania, or if you’re navigating any other state-specific variance situation, it’s important to understand that each variance type must be handled on its own terms.

Ready to Correct Your Labels?

A misprinted law label doesn’t have to derail your operations. With adhesive Tyvek correction labels and American Law Label’s documentation service, the path to compliance is straightforward and faster than you might expect.

Request a quote or drop us a line to get started. If you have questions about whether your situation qualifies for a corrective label approach, our consulting and training services are also available to walk you through your options.

Our name might be “American” Law Label, but we also know Canadian labels like the back of our hand, too! Partner with us, and you can have both U.S. and Canadian labels designed and printed at the same time by the same team.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Canadian government’s requirements for labels, use of the French language, exempted products, and further reading.

Want to get the inside scoop on Canadian labels? RSVP for our sister company GRS’ upcoming webinar!

Canadian Labeling Requirements

The Canadian Federal government requires labeling of textile articles, including stuffed textile articles. Depending on the type of product, Canadian labels can either be a permanent label able to withstand 10 cleanings, or a non-permanent label such as a hang tag or sticker.

At minimum, the label must disclose two pieces of information: the dealer identity, and the fiber content and percentages of the product.

Dealer Identity

The Canadian government defines a product’s dealer as “the person who is a manufacturer, processor, finisher or retailer of a textile fibre product, or a person who is engaged in the business of importing or selling any textile fibre product” (IV. Definitions, 1. Dealer).

To identify the dealer, your product’s label must either include a Canadian identification number (CA number) or the dealer’s name and full postal address.

Fiber Information

Canadian labels must also disclose the product’s fiber content and percentages.

There are three components that must be considered when determining an article’s fiber content: outer covering/shell, findings, and stuffing/filling. Requirements for disclosing each part of an article differ by product type.

  1. Outer Covering/Shell: Must always be disclosed.
  2. Findings: Textile fiber parts added to a product for a functional purpose (other than filling or providing warmth) do not need to be disclosed. However, if any claims are made of that fiber, then the fiber must be disclosed on the label.
  3. Stuffing/Filling: Must be disclosed for products not exempted below. However, if any claims are made of a filling in an exempted product, that information must be disclosed on the label.
    1. Exemptions: Mattresses, box-springs, cushions, chair pads, pot holders, oven mitts, placemats, mattress protectors, or upholstered furniture

Fiber information must be presented in both English and French. The province of Quebec may require additional language translations outside of the scope of the Canadian Textile Laws.

Quebec Translations

In 2022, the province of Quebec passed Bill 96, a law which amended the Charter of the French Language to require that labels, packaging, and product inscriptions be available in French.

Specifically, Quebec requires that all products sold in the province are labeled in French, and that the use of French is given equal prominence with other languages on any packages or containers.

This requirement applies to all product inscriptions, including care instructions, marketing information, and labels.

The American Law Label team personally contacted Quebec’s Office of the French Language to inquire about any exemptions to this requirement. The office’s response was that every inscription on a product or its packaging, including labels, must be available in French in the same terms.

That means essentially all product inscriptions must be translated into French, including care labels, law labels, flammability labels, and others.

When you partner with American Law Label for Canadian labels, we will thoroughly translate your English-language labels into French. It’s a simple way to ensure that your labels will meet the requirements in both the United States and Canada in one easy transaction.

Product Exemptions

There are a handful of consumer textile articles that are exempt from the requirements of the Textile Labelling Act and Regulations.

Some highlights include:

  • Articles intended for a one‑time use only
  • Toys
  • Sports and games equipment other than sport garments
  • Playpens, crib‑pens, strollers, jumpers, walkers and car seats for infants or children
  • Pet accessories

You can find the full list of exempted products in Appendix E of the Guide to the Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations.

There are two European standards that govern the use of chemicals in consumer products, and they may affect your products for sale across the European Union.

Here we explore the RoHS and REACH standards and what they mean for your business.

What is RoHS?

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a European standard that was adopted in 2003 to oversee the use of chemicals in electrical and electronic equipment.

RoHS specifically restricts the use of materials like lead and mercury in electronic products. The goal is to prevent hazardous chemicals from entering the waste and/or recycling streams.

What is REACH?

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European standard that entered into law in 2007, and has since evolved to meet modern-day standards for the use and handling of chemicals.

In short, REACH aims to protect the health of consumers and the environment by overseeing the use of chemicals in consumer products. The standard governs the registration, reporting and evaluation of products that include chemicals.

How Do RoHS and REACH Affect My Product?

If you sell any type of product in the EU, you must comply with RoHS and REACH standards. At American Law Label, we have found that many customers across the United States, like hospitals, have also pledged themselves to products that adhere to these standards.

American Law Label has multiple materials and printing methods that are compliant with REACH and RoHS. Rest assured that your products will comply with all relevant standards, no matter where they are sold.

The information that’s printed on your law label is incredibly important to staying compliant across the United States — but did you know that the actual material the law label is made of is equally important?

State regulatory agencies require law labels to be printed on material that resists tears and abrasions, and it must be securely attached to the product.

American Law Label stocks several materials that meet state requirements for law labels. Here we explore the two most popular law label materials: Tyvek® and Tritext.

Tyvek® — Meet the Minimum Requirements

DuPont™ Tyvek® is the law label industry mainstay for good reason. Tyvek® is a durable material that is tear-resistant, abrasion-resistant, water-resistant and stands up to exposure to the elements.

Tyvek® labels can be used for various types of regulatory labels including law labels, warning labels and care labels, among others.

If satisfying the minimum requirements for compliance is your goal, Tyvek® is a trusted solution. You can learn more about Tyvek® by tapping the button below.

Tritext — Go Above and Beyond

Que Media Tritext7, or simply Tritext, is American Law Label’s premium material. Compared to other materials like Tyvek®, Tritext offers greater tear-resistance and improved print quality. It also boasts better UV and weather resistance for products that will be exposed to the elements.

Tritext can be used in place of Tyvek® for all applications, from law labels and warning labels to care labels and more.

If you want the most premium material available for your product’s law labels, Tritext is the answer. Tap the button below to learn more about Tritext.

Each year, there is increased scrutiny for the manufacturers, importers and retailers of clothing storage units to protect children from the risk of tip-over. In 2023 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) adopted a standard that gives consumers peace of mind about the clothing storage units they bring into their homes.

Here’s what the STURDY act means for your clothing storage product and your compliance status in the United States.

What is the STURDY Act?

STURDY (Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth) is a U.S. law that aims to protect children from clothing storage unit tip-overs.

STURDY was signed into U.S. law in December of 2022, and requires dressers, armoires, wardrobes, and other clothing storage units to be tested for their stability.

In September 2023, the CPSC adopted the previously voluntary ASTM F2057-23 standards to meet the requirements of the STURDY act.

How are Clothing Storage Units Tested?

The adopted ASTM standard involves tests for stability in several scenarios to simulate real use conditions. Testing scenarios include:

  • Tests for stability when the unit is placed on carpeting,
  • Tests for stability with loaded drawers and with multiple drawers open
  • Tests that simulate the weight of children up to 60 pounds interacting with the unit

How Can My Clothing Storage Product Comply with STURDY?

The CPSC now requires all clothing storage units to carry a warning label that identifies the risk of tip-over.

The warning label must be conspicuous and brightly colored. The contents of the warning label depend on the type of product and the results of the stability tests.

Get Your Tip-Over Warning Label

Let consumers know that your product has passed the CPSC’s rigorous stability testing, and that your product is safe in their home. Count on American Law Label to design your STURDY-compliant tip-over warning label.

From mattresses and pillows to clothing and toys, many types of products have labeling requirements. But not all labels are created equal. The material that your label is made of can spell the difference between compliance and costly fines.

Here we cover common law label materials, the types of products they are useful for, and how American Law Label can support your label needs.

Tear-Resistant Labels

Tear-resistant labels are the standard across the U.S., and they’re required for all stuffed articles.

Required for these products:

  • Mattresses
  • Pillows
  • Stuffed toys
  • Quilted clothing
  • Cushions
  • Upholstered furniture

Waterproof and Washable Labels

Here’s a quick rule of thumb: if your product must be cleaned in a washing machine, it likely needs a waterproof or washable law label. This includes clothing and bedding products, among others.

Useful for these products:

  • Outdoor furniture
  • Washable rugs
  • Comforters
  • Pillows
  • Quilts
  • Clothing

Weather / UV Resistant Labels

Labels that can withstand the elements are required for most products that are meant for the outdoors. For instance, quilted jackets and stuffed patio furniture.

Useful for these products:

  • Tie-down straps
  • Tarps
  • Boat and car covers
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Parachutes

All Your Label Needs In One Place

Whatever your label needs, American Law Label has multiple materials that can meet your product’s legal requirements. While Tyvek® is the industry standard, we have alternative premium materials that exceed Tyvek® in strength and resistance to tears, water and exposure.

Mistakes happen, even in the world of compliance. If you discover that your product’s law label has an error or incorrect information on it, it can open you up to serious consequences.

Fortunately, adhesive cover-up labels can solve the issue of incorrect law labels. Read on to learn about common law label mistakes, the risks of those errors, and how adhesive cover-up labels can help you achieve compliance.

Does my product need a corrective label?

If your law label contains incorrect information about your product or the companies involved in manufacturing or selling it, then you need a corrective label.

Here are common issues with law labels that require an adhesive cover-up label:

  • Address change
  • Incorrect URN or RN
  • Incorrect filling materials or percentages
  • Non-compliant formatting
  • Non-compliant additions to the label
    • Company logo
    • Phone number
    • Website

What is the risk if my law label has a mistake on it?

Incorrect labels can mean much more than a slap on the wrist. If your law label has incorrect information on it, you are putting your product and your organization at serious risk.

Incorrect law labels can cause:

  • Major shipping delays, if caught before the product reaches the market
  • Fines or stop sales, if caught after the product reaches the market
  • Damaged relationships with retailers

What can I do to correct my incorrect law label?

If your law label has incorrect information on it, you do not necessarily need to start from scratch. American Law Label can help you acquire adhesive cover-up labels that stick to your existing label and present accurate information about your product.

Step 1: Law label audit and design

The first step is to determine the extent of the errors on your existing label. American Law Label’s team of experts will audit your label and create new compliant artwork.

Step 2: Submission

Next, American Law Label will submit your old label and the new, corrected artwork to regulatory agencies across the U.S.

Step 3: Variances

In addition to the labels, five agencies require approved variances. American Law Label will file the necessary paperwork in Connecticut, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and the City of Detroit.

Step 4: Ohio lab testing

Along with the variance paperwork and labels, Ohio requires a lab test confirming the filling material and percentages from an approved lab. American Law Label will help you submit the necessary materials for testing.

Step 5: Printing

Once the regulatory agencies have approved the variance paperwork, we can begin printing your adhesive labels. Print jobs can be shipped in 3 to 4 business days following approval.

What happens once I have my corrective labels?

Once you have your corrective labels in hand and variance approval to apply them, your production team can take action. They will cover up the incorrect sewn-in labels by applying the adhesive label directly on top of them.

It’s important to note that the adhesive label must be applied directly to the existing label, and not applied to the product itself. Several states do not accept adhesive labels that are applied directly to the product, so ensure that your production team follows these instructions carefully.

Correct your law label with American Law Label

When you find yourself with an incorrect law label, turn to the experts at American Law Label. We can print an adhesive cover-up label for your product, file for a variance and navigate additional lab testing on your behalf.

A compliant law label may only be the first step toward complete compliance. Many types of products require additional labels that ensure consumer product safety.

Read on to learn about common labels that may be required in addition to law labels, and what types of products need them.

Flammability Labels

There are several standards in place to reduce the risk of deaths and injuries associated with fires. Certain stuffed furniture products must be tested to ensure that they do not easily catch fire, and Flammability Labels certify that your product has passed the test.

Specifically, mattresses require a 16 CFR 1633 label to be sold in the United States. Upholstered furniture requires a CPSC flammability statement and CA TB 117 label in California.

Title VI Labels

In addition to any labels that are relevant to the product’s cushions, furniture products made with composite wood require Title VI labeling.

Formally, Title VI is known as the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Title VI. The Act ensures that products that contain hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard comply with formaldehyde emissions standards.

Title VI Labels certify that these products have been tested to fall within the allowed range of emissions. American Law Label can guide you through the testing process and print your Title VI Labels once they’ve been certified.

Tracking Labels

If your product is intended for children under the age of twelve (12), it requires a Tracking Label. As the name suggests, Tracking Labels help track a product back to its point of origin, including where and when it was manufactured.

In some cases, both the product packaging and the product itself must be permanently marked with a Tracking Label. American Law Label can help you understand your requirements and design labels to keep your products compliant.

Product Registration Cards

Durable products for infants and toddlers require a Product Registration Card. Product Registration Cards allow consumers to send their contact information to the product’s manufacturer so they can be notified in case of a safety alert or recall.

These products may require additional warning labels. American Law Label can help you determine what labels are needed in addition to Product Registration Cards.

Ensure Your Complete Compliance

From law labels to additional consumer product safety labeling, American Law Label can design and print any labels your product may need to remain compliant. Start the process by tapping the button below.
